About WELL certification
The WELL Building Standard is a certification programme devoted to occupant health and well-being in the built environment. Developed by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), it focuses on ten core concepts (in WELL v2): Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind, Community, plus an Innovation section.
Each concept has evidence-based criteria to enhance human health (e.g. air quality standards, circadian lighting, fitness opportunities, mental health design, and social engagement). For tenants and employees, a WELL certification signals that the building owner has prioritised their well-being, comfort, and safety.
This can mean superior air and water quality, abundant natural light, ergonomic and active design features, noise control, and access to amenities that promote mental and physical health. Organisations seeking to improve employee satisfaction and productivity often value WELL-certified spaces for their positive impact on occupants.
How Smart Spaces can help you
Smart Spaces is valuable for meeting WELL requirements because they monitor and control the environmental conditions and occupant interactions that WELL measures.
WELL’s Air concept calls for strict air quality levels – Smart Spaces can integrate air quality sensors and advanced filtration controls to ensure pollutant levels stay low and ventilation adjusts automatically to meet targets.
Under Light and Thermal Comfort, Smart Spaces can adjust lighting colour temperature and intensity, or heating/cooling output in real-time, to keep conditions within WELL-specified ranges. Beyond environmental controls, WELL’s Community concept emphasises occupant engagement and inclusivity; here Smart Spaces excels by providing a digital platform for communication and engagement.
WELL certification is awarded at four levels based on a point system:
For occupants, being in a WELL Gold or Platinum building suggests a workplace with cleaner air, ample daylight, nutritious food options, fitness opportunities, and policies that support their overall well-being on a daily basis.
