Developer Great Portland Estates (GPE) completed The Hickman in September 2020, delivering 75,300 square feet of sustainable, tech-enabled office space in Whitechapel, London. The Hickman, Challenger House, a 171-bedroom hotel, and two courtyards to the rear are located near Aldgate East Underground station and the Elizabeth Line Crossrail station.
The Hickman was extended and renovated, with the office entrance relocated, the core rotated to increase the efficiency of the floorplates and the building’s services replaced. It is a tech-enabled building, with tenants able to use a smart workplace app called sesame™ developed by Smart Spaces to access a variety of services and perks, as well as regulate their office environment.
The Smart Spaces app gives contactless access to the building and lifts, building service control, and statistics for optimising office space as well as extensive, real-time energy analysis. Staff can also book desks before leaving home, check the building’s air quality, and access up-to-date transportation statistics to assist them to avoid peak hours.
Users can browse 150 magazines and pre-order a coffee to be picked up from the café at reception throughout their journey. They may also use the app to manage lighting and temperature once they’re at their workstation. The app also includes a concierge service that connects users to local lifestyle offers and services, such as gyms, local stores, and the diverse nightlife of London.
Smart Spaces clients, 22 Bishopsgate and 160 Old Street have also subsequently been awarded Platinum status.
